Because if we fail to do so, this small and niche subscene as we know it might cease to exist. we as a scene, all of us, from endusers to developers, need to ensure that situations like this can never happen again. It does not matter who said what at what juncture in frustration, who is the better coder, who follows the best coding practices, who said what behind one's back, etc. Mistakes have been made in this scene by all of us, but that doesn't mean we can't learn from it and strive to do better from here on out. There is a certain air of competitiveness, distrust and bitterness that has taken hold in emulation that quite frankly is further exasperating the situation we find ourselves in today.
The tremendous loss in losing Near should serve as a catalyst for us as a scene and community to reflect on our own behaviour, our own inaction and strive to do better. There's absolutely no excuse for it - it costs you absolutely nothing to be considerate of others' feelings.Many have taken to Twitter to share their condolences and pay tribute: Just read the heartbreaking news about BSNES developer Near's passing and the infuriating circumstances thereof. I have no time for people who harass and are cruel to others. Sometimes you can see why people get angry online, but this is different - it's not losing your temper, it's deliberate cruelty. I often see people go out of their way to laugh at someone or dismiss something they're going through or struggling with. The particular bullies Near was dealing with are extremists motivated by bigotry, but even everyday "non-extreme" people can treat others horribly sometimes, particularly online. It sounds like there was a community of people dedicated to harassing them for no reason other than being "weird" and I think that's a very frightening and depressing thought. It's horrifying how common it is to harass people simply for being neurodivergent, trans/nonbinary, or otherwise being perceived as "different". I think it's deeply upsetting that so many people went out of their way to bully Near, who was by all accounts a kind, gentle person.
